Purpose of the Standard

The EN124 standard outlines the requirements and testing methods for manhole covers used in roadways and vehicle passage areas. Its goal is to ensure the safety, durability, and reliability of manhole covers during use.

Design and Safety Requirements

Shape: Manhole covers are typically round or rectangular. Round covers are more commonly used because they cannot fall through their openings.  

Anti-slip Design: The surface of manhole covers usually features an anti-slip texture to enhance safety in wet conditions.  

Sealing Performance: Some manhole covers are designed to be waterproof or weather-resistant to prevent debris and water from entering.

Common Materials

Ductile Iron: This is the most widely used material due to its high strength and corrosion resistance. It is often coated with protective materials, such as epoxy resin, and is suitable for heavy-duty loads.  

Composite Materials: Made from resin, glass fiber, or recycled plastic, these materials are lightweight and corrosion-resistant. They are suitable for lighter loads and are non-conductive, making them ideal for use in access ports for power facilities.
